The Odyssey
8.5/10 stinky bananas
Damn good movie... it doesn't sniff the top 5 Nolan movies. Not even in the conversation. Just to clarify, that's not an indictment of this movie; that's a credit to how great a director Christopher Nolan is.
I thoroughly enjoyed The Odyssey. I like each island stop on the journey back to Ithaca. I really like Odysseus fighting the suitors and reclaiming his home. But at no point was I really LOVING the movie.
I do LOVE the use of practical effects. The fact that the gigantic cyclops is mostly practical is fucking insane. Incredible.
The witch island scene is so disturbing and unsettling, and I mean that in the most complimentary way possible. Nolan knocked that scene out of the park. I was squirming in my seat. Pound-for-pound best scene in the movie. AND, ALL PRACTICAL EFFECTS! It makes a difference, folks. A big difference.
Acting was pretty good all around. Nothing crazy. I will give the first ever Nic Cage Actor of the Movie Award to... Robert Pattinson. I love him. What a career. "Get those Beggars out of here." 10/10 line delivery. I audibly laughed in the theater.
After the movie, I had one lingering question in my head as I left the theater. Why, in God's name, would Odysseus shoot the cyclops in the eye AFTER everybody escaped? What an absolutely bone-headed decision. Way to go, Matt. You got a few more of your buddies killed for absolutely no reason. The crew was well within their rights to be pissed. I legitimately thought about that for the next 2 hours of the movie. What a fucking idiot.
Top 5 Nolan movies in no particular order:
Inception
Interstellar
Oppenheimer
The Dark Knight
Tenet
I already know what you're thinking. "Tenet? No way. That doesn't deserve to be in the top 10!" All I'll say to that is... you don't know ball. Tenet is an unreal movie, and it will only get better as time goes on. See ya.
