7.6/10 stinky bananas
More of the same from Denis Villeneuve. Just good. Nothing special.
People are losing their fucking shit over this movie, and again, I don't get it. Is it because nothing good has come out in theatres for awhile so people are craving a blockbuster and they are creaming their pants over a lackluster movie? That's a hell of a run-on sentence. Pretty impressive.
The same issues from the first Dune are present in this one. I'm not a fan of any of the characters (with the exception of Austin Butler, I like that guy). Timothee does not work as Paul and Zendaya acts like a grumpy child for 90 percent of the movie. Also, Bautista's character becomes a neutered dog in this movie for no apparent reason. The big fat guy ending up being a nothing burger of a villain as well. Disappointing.
This Paul guy refuses to use his voice control thing. I don't understand it. It's infuriating.
The witches are a non-factor. They act like they are behind everything that's going on but there is zero evidence of that. They are just following the power and are like, "See? We did that."
The big battle at the end is extremely underwhelming. I needed to see way more fighting. Battle of Helms Deep style.
Having said that, Dune: Part Two has it's moments. I really enjoyed the first third of the movie where Chalamet is getting trained by the Fremon and they are fighting the spice traders. Great character development. I was starting to get the Dune fever and then it went away with a slow middle act.
The final showdown between Chalamet and Butler is excellent. The stakes are high and the tension is palpable. It definitely got the heart racing. It reminded me a lot of the duel from Black Panther. It really felt like Chalamet might bite the dust. It's the best part of both movies by far.
Again, Dune: Part Two is best consumed as background noise while you do something more important with your time. And that's my TEDTalk. See ya.
