8.3/10 stinky bananas
Good movie. Fun movie. Having said that, Deadpool & Wolverine is the worst of the three Deadpool movies. It didn't come close to meeting my lofty expectations.
The fan service is out of control. Some of it's great, but it's just too much. Gambit, Blade, and Johnny Storm are fun bit roles (especially Channing Tatum's Gambit, he's hysterical). But, why is Elektra in this movie? She brings absolutely nothing to it. Did we really need to bring back Sabretooth to just get his head lopped off in three seconds? Did we need thrift shop Juggernaut? I don't know. Some of it just felt over the top.
Cassandra Nova is a mediocre villain. The finger thing she does is cool, but that's about it, she's got no juice. I thought Marvel would've cooked up a much better villain for a movie of this magnitude.
Hugh Jackman is excellent in this movie, but this version of the Wolverine bothers me and I'll tell you why. There should've been a 10 minute flashback scene showing why he was such a fuckup in his universe. A flashback scene of Logan going to the bar, getting shitfaced, the X-Men getting hunted, and Wolverine going on a killing spree would've been unreal. The character needed to be fleshed out. If they handled the character better, the ending of the movie would've had a much bigger payoff.
Okay, on to the good stuff.
The action is great. The opening credits scene is the best scene in the movie. Deadpool cracking skulls with Logan's skeleton while dancing to NSYNC is a fantastic piece of filmmaking. The Honda Odyssey fight is excellent too. Perfect song choice with cool camera work and fight choreography. Two thumbs up!
Deadpool's comedic chops are alive and well. My favourite bit is the fat guy that calls HR after eye fucking Deadpool. It's not that funny when I write it in a sentence, but it's funny in the movie. Trust me. Nobody knows funny like I know funny.
The soundtrack is incredible. 10/10. No notes.
Fun movie. Bye.
